STEP Project Background

The first iteration of the Summer Teams Enterprise Programme (STEP) was conceptualised and run in the summer of 2020, in response to many students being unable to take up summer work experience placements or internships in the wake of Covid-19. This first iteration of STEP was jointly coordinated and delivered by CEED, The Careers Centre, Playfair Consultancy and The Students’ Association.

The projects were designed to promote student engagement with graduate attributes and to support interdisciplinary teamwork among students based in different locations around the world. The first run of programme attracted over 200 applications, demonstrating that students who had experienced significant disruption to their studies were keen to engage with this intensive, skill-focused initiative. The programme has been led by Dr Shruti Narayanswamy and coordinated by colleagues in CEED since 2021-2022. Our STEP projects are possible due to the hard work of Dr Kirsty Ross at the University of St Andrews and her wonderful Wiki training.

Wow!
91 projects have been sponsored under STEP between 2020-2023 representing 13-15 academic Schools of the University of St Andrews every year of the programme. 459 students have completed STEP so far (with approx. 170 projected to complete in 2023). Since 2020: 3000+ hours of skills-development workshops delivered, 9000+ individual reflective logs submitted by students.
