Storing soil and preparing plates

On the second day in the lab all the different soil samples that were collected were split into specific amounts into 3 smaller tubes and one larger tube. This was so that when doing tests to find out more information about the soil and the bacteria within it smaller samples fixed weights of soil could be used.

On the second day plates for bacteria to grow in were prepared also. This was done by melting a jelly like substance called agar and pouring them into some clear Petri dishes. The agar contains food for the bacteria to grow so that after bacteria was removed from the soil it could be put on the plate prepared and would grow.
